You spend a lot of time and money putting together the party of a lifetime. Here are the 7 Mistakes Brides Make When Choosing a Chicago Wedding DJ.
7 Mistakes Brides Make When Choosing a Chicago Wedding DJ
1. They choose only on the recommendation of a friend or relative
You might think that this is one of the best ways to find a DJ. And you’d be right.
The experience that your friend or relative has can be invaluable.
Where the mistake happens is if you rely solely on this recommendation.
They may have had a great party. It might have helped that the DJ was good.
But there’s more…
2. They choose based on the number of reviews or awards
Reviews and awards are valuable. DJ’s that don’t have them will mock those that do.
Awards from companies like WeddingWire and reviews from The Knot are excellent sources for online research.
In fact coupled with the recommendation from a friend or relative and your shopping could be complete.
3. They choose based on wanting music only
When you go looking for music only you will miss out on tapping the expertise of a well trained, and seasoned, MC and event director.
You, or worse one of your wedding party, will be stuck with keeping everything on track and wondering if there is something you should be doing next.
In the end you’ll have a great celebration, but there will be things that you didn’t know because you bought Just Music.

4. They wait too long to make a decision
One of our DJ’s was the DJ at my best friends wedding. I had the honor of being Best Man. I also recommended a photographer.
I recommended the same photographer for another wedding.
We were too late and she was not available.
There was another photographer who was great. But there was some worry about the decision initially.
5. They choose based on price alone
First question most couples ask when shopping for a DJ: “Looking for a quote to DJ…”
They’ve either seen us and are ready to book, or this is the only starting question they’ve been taught to ask.
That’s OK. but if you decide, or don’t decide, on price alone you miss out on some great discoveries.
Every couple that has taken the time in allowing us to get to know them before they book, have said that they didn’t realize how much was involved and how many possibilities there are to make their wedding really special.
Don’t get the best price, get the best value.
6. They choose without knowing who the DJ will be
DJing for many is a part-time position. There are companies who will promise to pick the DJ for you. Or you’ll be invited to an open house (AFTER you book), to pick your dj (at which time the DJ you want will not be available).
DJ companies treat their business in a cyclical, seasonal manner. Hiring and training DJ’s early in the year to fill slots emptied from last years crop in anticipation of the coming busy season.
If you can find a successful, full-time, career professional, you are so smart (and lucky).
7. They choose a DJ and then do nothing until a month before the wedding
DJ’s and DJ companies will take your booking fee and disappear. 1-2 months before the wedding they’ll reach out to check in with you. After some phone/email tag, as the day looms closer, you might finally get a chance to talk to your DJ.
If your DJ is a part-timer, this will often be on their time and not yours.
Get started with your planning with your DJ sooner. There’ll be less stress closer to the date. And you can create so much more toward your unique and memorable event, than if you did by waiting to get a phone call the Sunday before your wedding.
