5 Questions To Ask Your Chicago Wedding DJ
before you sign a contract
You want to talk basics, you want to talk music, you want to talk pricing and payment. But you also want to cover logistics and style.
The Basics
Among the questions you’ll be asking in this getting-to-know-you phase are availability, how long they’ve been in business and the number of weddings they’ve done. But my number one most important questions is:
“Will you be the DJ?”
When I first got started in the wedding business I worked for a well known national DJ service. I quickly became one the most requested DJ’s on staff. People saw my enthusiasm at events and wanted that same energy at theirs. My clients also appreciated the behind the scenes organization and my follow up enough to recommend me to their friends and family.
When you ask “Who will actually be the DJ” you want to make sure that you are meeting that person before you sign the contract. And you want to make sure that THEIR name is on the paperwork. They sign it, they commit to the event, and you have access to communicate them in a reasonable fashion in the days and months leading up to your date.
The Music
“How do I pick the music?”
Knowing what kind of music you like, knowing what to expect from your guests musical tastes, will go a long way to keeping the party going.
No one expects you to be out on the dance floor all night long, unless that’s what you want to do (and a lot of couples do).
Furthermore, choosing the music is one of the most fun parts of planning your party with your DJ.
But you want to make sure that your DJ is a good resource for the info you. After all they are the one who has been to more weddings than anyone you know. (And been right in the middle of the greatest parties).
Knowing if they can provide you with the guidance you need is one thin. Another is knowing how they get their music. Is it legally purchased and provided by a company that pays all the licensing? The answer should be yes to all of the above.
The Money
“How much, what’s include, and how do I pay?”
OK, so that’s more than one question. But knowing all of that is the gateway into the party of your life. Not knowing that might leave you with less time than you need to party all night long. Or it might end up costing you more in exorbitant over time fees that you could have put into the initial contract (at a more reasonable rate).
Get the Who, What, Where, and How out of the way early and then you can get to the Why of the matter. Which is that you will be creating the party of a lifetime, together.
The Logistics
“How does your set up work?”
Knowing what the presentation style of your DJ/MC is can make or break your party. Knowing the presentation style of the tools they use to make that party happen is important as well.
The last thing you want is a pile of gear plopped down in the middle of your well decorated wedding. Cleanliness, no cords showing, well draped/dressed facades-all part of the plan.
Don’t have some gory nightmare of a setup ruin the fantasy dream of your wedding.
The Style
“What can WE do TOGETHER to make this the BEST WEDDING EVER?”
Not enough time is spent on the style of your wedding and how it relates to what the DJ can do for you. Often too music time is spent handling the details of decor and not enough on how the mood of the music, how it’s played/when it’d played, what is said/when it’s said that a great deal of fantastic memory making is wasted.
It’s like hiring a photographer and not getting shots of the key moments at your wedding. Your DJ is the spokesperson for many of these moments, and the musical guide to carry you and your guests through this musical journey from beginning to end.
