Throwback Thursday Wedding Planner
The Chicago Wedding Planner Claire Weller interview was well read, yes. Why is that? An accomplished and well liked person is what’s behind it all.
We asked some interesting questions and got some insightful responses.
Whenever talking with an industry peer the conversations often comes around to what got you into the business.
It can’t ever be about just wanting to make some cash. And it doesn’t matter who it is. Florist, hair, makeup, DJ, photographer, film maker, event space management. The money will come but there has to be more. And that’s where the responses get true and honest.
That’s not to say that someone gets into the business just because they need to make their car payment. I’ve interviewed many prospective DJ trainees who see an ad for what they think is a fun gig. They think it will fit in nicely to their current financial status (broke) and that all they have to do is show up and get paid. They usually don’t make it past the second training session.
There are those, myself included, who make a transition from one discipline in special events to their ultimate career. I worked my way up, hard, to learn everything I needed to be the best I could be.
But this Q&A was with a wedding planner. And that takes a special set of skills to master. Because, like the rest of us on the team, the wedding planner is working to make sure this couple (you) has the greatest wedding ever within their style budget, and time constraints.
And they have to think on your feet. When hiring anyone for your wedding you’re not expecting a cookie cutter, one size fits all process. You have a uniques set of desires and circumstances that need to be fulfilled.
And we are making a long term commitment with you. So you want to make doubly sure the fit is right.
You will also want them to have passion for days. Passion for the work, for your wedding in particular. And passion for the people around them being just as successful as they are.
Being confident is another important skill. But not so confident that they become rude and cocky. I don’t mind having someone state their opinion. But there are too many not so nice, domineering individuals in the world. And my time is too precious to waste around them. So is yours.
In conclusion, there’s so much more to tell.
Let’s let Claire Weller of Big City Brides and this Throwback Thursday Wedding Planner tell the story.
