Hoda Kotb officiates a surprise wedding for couple who had to cancel theirs
It didn’t take long for John to realize his girlfriend Melanie was a keeper. He loved her goofy side, her terrible TikTok dances, and the way she took care of everyone.
After three and a half years they were engaged.
“Melanie loves to plan,” said John, “she plans out her weekend on Monday…”
And planning for their biggest weekend ever was no exception. Set for mid April, the couple would begin their new Lives and start a family. Then the world stopped.
Arizona governor issued a stay at home order. All but non-essential businesses were closed.
Melanie said, “My dream is falling through.” She wanted to spend her life with John and not being able to do that was heartbreaking.
That’s when Melanie’s friends reached out to the Today Show. They knew Hoda Kotb is an ordained minister, so John the groom and Mel’s best friend Kiera hatched a plan.
John said, “There’s nothing like planning a virtual wedding over the phone for days.”
So the day arrives.
Melanie THINKS she’s having a Zoom call with just her best friend. But her entire family has joined for a surprise toast on what would have been their wedding day.
This is what happened:
Thanks to Melanie & John, their family & friends, and Hoda Kotb with the Today Show producers for giving us something to laugh with cry tears of joy.
